About the Brushed & Oiled Effect

The brushed effect adds to the natural appearance of the wood. A wire brush is most commonly used to scrape away the top layer. This reveals the inner grains of the wood, which are harsher and more visible. The result is a rustic looking floor with bundles of character.

To protect the floor, an oil coating is applied. Unlike lacquer, the oil seeps through the wood. This protects not just the surface, but the entire plank. While it does wear off quicker than lacquer, it is simple to reapply. Oiled floors also have the added benefit of hiding scratches. The brushed finish also hides wear and tear better than a smooth finish.

Brushed and oiled engineered floors do provide tough protection. However, they are best suited to low-traffic areas. This is because they do require a lot of maintenance when exposed to higher levels of foot traffic.

Some oiled floors also provide added slip resistance. If this is a feature you’re interested in, look out for hard wax oiled flooring. You can also invest in commercial grade engineered wood flooring, although most are designed with home use in mind.

One thing to keep in mind is the floor’s re-sanding potential. Brushed and oiled engineered wood flooring is a little trickier to sand down than most. This is because the brushed effect will be lost when the surface is sanded down. Unless you learn how to create a brushed effect yourself, the floor will have a totally different look.

You can install these floors with suitable underfloor heating systems. This allows you to enhance their comfort in colder weather.

There are a wide range of brushed and oiled engineered wood floors to choose from. We recommend browsing our full range to see which best fits the style of your home.

Installation

You will receive full installation instructions with each floor you purchase. Most brushed and oiled engineered wood flooring comes with a tongue and groove system. This makes fitting the planks fast and easy. They simply slot together for a floating floor installation.

Alternatively, you have the option to secure the planks down. After connecting them with the tongue and groove system, you can glue or nail them down. This will take a lot longer than floating floor installation. However, securing the planks down ensures they don’t move or pose a tripping hazard.

We offer free samples of many of our floors. This allows you to compare designs and ensure you’re choosing the best one for your home.

There are many other finishes available in our engineered wood collection if you do not find a suitable brushed & lacquered finished floor in this collection.
