Three Things to Assess before You Order Flooring

Three Things to Assess before You Order Flooring

Getting a floor that matches your needs exactly takes work. The process can seem difficult when you are ordering online. Some aspects could depend on your specific requirements. However, there are some aspects that need due consideration. Here are the top 3 things to assess when placing your order.

Room Area

Know the exact area of your room. This way, you will be able to order the exact quantity of planks/tiles required.

For exact results, it is important to take into account all areas of your room including corners.

If your room is a simple rectangle, measure its length and width. Multiply these numbers to get the room area.

In case the room has cupboards, divide the room into smaller rectangles including the area occupied by the cupboards(s). Calculate the area of each such space. Add the end results for the final measurement.

In case of rooms with an odd shape, divide the room into rectangles and squares. Calculate the area of each such space and add them all to arrive at the final figure.

Account for 5 to 10% wastage in room area calculation. This will compensate for errors, extra cuts and any damage during installation.

If you are adding 5%, then calculate the final area of the room as follows:

Total room area x 0.05

In case you want a buffer of 10%, replace 0.05 with 0.10.

Measure twice each time to ensure that you have the right measurements.

Type of Subfloor

Identifying the subfloor type is important to know the sort of underlayment you would need for the floor. Pull up the carpet, tile or plank and check the existing subfloor to identify what it’s made of.

A wood subfloor is common in rooms above ground level. Concrete subfloor may be used in spaces such as basements and rooms at ground level.

Decide on the Floor Finish after Testing a Sample

Finishes vary depending on the type of floor. For example, if you are going for a laminate floor, you could choose a floor with a smooth, embossed or a hand-scraped finish.

Smooth finishes offer additional options of low, medium and high gloss. An Embossed finish imparts a real wood look to a laminate floor by giving it a rich textured appearance. A Hand-Scraped finish gives a floor the classic worn-out look of wood.

When it comes to wood flooring, the options include lacquered and oiled finish. These finishes, in addition, to enhancing the floor’s surface texture, offer several practical benefits. The floor becomes easy to clean and maintain and the wear resistance is higher.

The floor finish you choose depends on your aesthetic tastes. It is strongly recommended that you test samples. This way, you know how a floor will look in different shades of light.
